Biography

Dr Heinz Schandl, PhD in sociology and MA in Social and Economic Sciences is a senior science leader at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) based in Canberra. He is an honorary professor at the Australian National University (ANU) Fenner School for Environment and Society and an adjunct professor at Nagoya University in Japan. He is a member of the UN Environment International Resource Panel and president elect of the International Society of Industrial Ecology.
His research links social theory, industrial metabolism and environmental policy and investigates options for decoupling of economic growth and human wellbeing from natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions achieved through Sustainable Consumption and Production, resource efficiency, waste minimization and greenhouse gas abatement. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal papers, 5 books and over a hundred policy reports and lead projects for the European Commission, UN Environment, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the World Bank.
